If you’ve ever stared at an ingredient label and felt like you needed a chemistry degree to decode it, you’re not alone. The beauty industry relies on that confusion. It's a strategy.

So let me define the most common categories you’ll see — not in scientific jargon, but in what they actually do to your skin and why they’re in the bottle.

Sulfates (SLS, SLES, sodium lauryl sulfate)

What they are: Detergents. Industrial-strength cleaning agents that create foam and lather. Originally developed for engine degreasers and garage-floor cleaners.

Why they’re in your products: Because consumers associate foam with “clean.” We’ve been trained that if it doesn’t lather, it’s not working.

What they do to skin: Strip the natural lipid barrier. Sulfates are so effective at removing oil that they take the protective oils your skin needs along with the dirt. The result is tightness, dryness, and — counterintuitively — increased oil production as your skin scrambles to replace what was stripped. If your face feels “squeaky clean” after washing, that’s not clean. That’s damage.

Phthalates

What they are: A family of chemicals used to make fragrances last longer and plastics more flexible.

Why they’re in your products: They stabilize synthetic fragrance so it doesn’t fade in the bottle. You’ll almost never see the word “phthalate” on a label because fragrance formulations are legally protected as trade secrets. The single word “fragrance” can legally hide dozens of compounds, phthalates included.

What they do to you: Phthalates are endocrine disruptors. That means they interfere with your hormone system — the system that regulates metabolism, reproduction, mood, and growth. They accumulate over time. A single exposure isn’t the issue. The issue is daily exposure across multiple products for years.

Fillers

What they are: Inert ingredients added to increase volume, texture, or spreadability without adding benefit. Common fillers include water, propylene glycol, and various thickeners and bulking agents.

Why they’re in your products: Margin. Fillers are cheap. Active ingredients are expensive. A bottle that’s 70% filler costs a fraction to produce and can retail at the same price as a concentrated product. The brand makes more money. Your skin gets less.

What they do to skin: Nothing — and that’s the problem. They take up space where active ingredients could be. Every gram of filler is a gram of something useful that isn’t there.

Emulsifiers

What they are: Chemicals that force oil and water to mix, since they naturally separate. Without emulsifiers, most lotions and creams wouldn’t hold together.

Why they’re in your products: Any product that combines water with oil (nearly every conventional moisturizer and lotion) requires an emulsifier to stay stable on the shelf.

What they do to skin: This one’s nuanced. Not all emulsifiers are harmful — some are plant-derived and gentle. But many synthetic emulsifiers can disrupt the skin barrier over time by stripping natural lipids during cleansing or leaving a residue that interferes with barrier function. The issue is the same as always: the dose and the accumulation.

Alcohol (denatured alcohol, SD alcohol, ethanol, isopropyl alcohol)

What it is: A fast-evaporating solvent.

Why it’s in your products: It creates that “lightweight,” “fast-absorbing” sensation. It also acts as a preservative and helps active ingredients penetrate — which sounds useful until you realize it’s also helping synthetic preservatives and fragrance chemicals penetrate alongside them.

What it does to skin: Dissolves the oils that form your moisture barrier. Repeated use leads to a compromised barrier, which leads to water loss, which leads to irritation, sensitivity, and premature aging. A compromised barrier also lets more environmental toxins in. It’s a cascade.

Here’s what connects all of these: none of them exist for your skin. They exist for the product — to make it foam, smell good, feel silky, sit on a shelf for two years, and cost less to manufacture.

They solve problems for the brand. Not for you.

This is why “chemical-free” matters — not as a marketing term, but as a real standard. When a product eliminates sulfates, it’s not using a gentler foaming agent. It’s not foaming at all, because foam was never the point. When it eliminates phthalates, it’s not hiding a “cleaner” synthetic fragrance. It’s either unscented or scented with actual plant material. When it eliminates water, it doesn’t need preservatives, because there’s nothing for bacteria to grow in.

Each removal forces a different kind of formulation. One where every ingredient has to earn its place.

If you’re choosing between products, don’t ask whether the label says “natural” — that word has no legal definition in the US and means nothing. Ask what’s NOT in it, and then ask why. If the answer to both questions makes sense, you’re holding something designed for your skin, not for
